Pizarro: KFOX’s Laurie Roberts among Clear Channel’s cuts

The award of the week for bonehead moves has to go to Clear Channel Communications for laying off Laurie Roberts, the midday disc jockey and program director for classic rock station KUFX-FM (98.5).

Roberts has been a fixture on South Bay radio for 30 years — but you couldn’t tell from her youthful appearance. She built followings at landmark rock stations KOME and KSJO before giving KFOX (as the station is more commonly known) instant credibility when she moved there in 1995.

“I was pretty much surprised,” said Roberts, who also was key in getting KFOX involved with local charities and community events. “It happened to a lot of good people. I was really fortunate to have the great run that I did.”

Way to go Clear Channel, instead of trying the approach of letting the greats you DO have give you the best they are , you decide to cut. Your loss is all I can say!

Laurie, I hope with all my heart that some Rock Station in the Bay Area knows how awesome you are as a DJ and snaps you up pronto. Laurie Roberts has always been one of my favorite DJ’s not only because she is super nice ( she helped me with a shout out to my fellow Jericho Rangers for the DVD for the Troops effort we had last year) but she has a mind just chock full of Rock History- she knows all!

I agree with Sal, bone head move but sadly it is not the first one Clear Channel has pulled. I give thanks to Sal for letting the fans know what has occurred. What do you the fans of Laurie and Greg and the others let go feel about this?

Laurie Roberts is not only a south-bay radio institution, she is one of the most kind-hearted and generous individuals I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Becasue she is not one to toot her own horn, she would never tell you that she was the architect of what KFOX has become…. from the hiring of Greg Kihn, Alphabet Soup, School of Rock and Last Band Standing….she was the brainchild behind all of these and many more. Her willingness to give of herself and to give to the community is a model we should all follow. Whatever radio station is lucky enough to secure her talents will be the one where my radio preset will be set…..and I’m not alone!!!

All the best, Laurie, you won’t be silenced for long!!!

I very much agree with your awesome words about Laurie. As I posted she has been such a help , not only to myself but to countless others. So many of the DJ’s have been instrumental in helping out in the community and as you say, never tooting their own horns. I think the listeners would be amazed to know what has been accomplished because of Laurie Roberts and SO many other Radio Personalities from the Bay Area.

I miss Laurie Roberts on KFOX! I enjoyed her afternoon shows. It was NOT COOL for Clear Channel/KFOX to let her go. I know Steve S. and I agree with what he said about Laurie.
Good luck to you Laurie and all my best

Wow,this is a shock. I grew up in the Bay Area listening to Laurie Roberts and really enjoyed her show on KFOX. When I moved to UT about 5 years ago, I would often listen to her show via the web and really enjoyed what she put together for her fans.

Learning that she was let go is like learning that we have all just lost our best friend. I wish her the best of luck and look forward to hearing her again on the airwaves. Lets all ‘put one on the shelf’ for Laurie as she works through these times.

I miss Laurie more and more each day. I’ve almost gotten to the point of not listening anymore to KFOX. She was such a great disc jockey (possibly the best in the entire Bay Area), and her replacement just doesn’t cut it. She sound so Top 40, and so different from all the other jocks, and worlds apart from Laurie. I miss you Laurie, but maybe I’ll see you up at the Mountain Winery again this year.

Completely Bogus they let Laurie Roberts go. I left the bay area 20 years ago but thanks to the internet found a familiar voice that still represents the best of the Bay Area rock scene and knows of its history (because she helped write some of it). I’ll be surfing the web to see where she pops up.

I was really sad to learn that clear channel let go of Laurie Roberts. I really enjoyed listening to her on the radio and actually had the pleasure of meeting her a few years ago at a local store in santa cruz. I hope to hear her familiar voice on another radio station very soon.

    Hi Jennifer

Thanks for coming and leaving a comment, I know many of Laurie’s friends feel the exact same way and we all hope to hear her voice again on the bay area radio waves/
