What a Zune can do and what it can’t

Well, I got the Zune as a birthday present from my brother ( hugs brother ;-p ) and I loaded up the Journey Album Essential Journey. Then since I had to do some work on my PC I thought it would be nice to listen to the music via my stereo speakers using Windows Media Center. Not so fast bucko, no can do on that one. Yep, you can own a Premium Vista OS and a nifty 120 GB Zune but the two will never go out on a date. No syncing for you my friends.

Now, I am not always the brightest bulb in the box, but is it not reasonable to think that Windows Media Center and Player ( being MS programs ) would be a nice fit for another Windows Program or other hardware from MS, like say the freaking Zune?

So, I can either buy another album for my computer ( and why would I do that, what is this the docks in Boston 1930s?) or I can simply not enjoy the music I have on the Zune via my computer and stereo speakers. Maybe next time Microsoft will consider the fact that this Vista OS costs 259.00 and the 120 GB costs another 259.00 and that being able to connect the two would be swell, and fair.

Gah, sorry. I wanted to write a review about the Zune, so here is what I DO like about it.

It can hold a sweet amount of tunes and videos, as well as TV shows so for a trip this would be smashing to have. Its pretty easy to get used to, the controls are okay but I would suggest maybe making the off switch a bit different. I like the look and feel, for me having a tiny iPod is like holding a cheap toy ( sorry Mac users, I am just saying ) so the weight of the Zune is nice. I like how it stacks up the music, but so far I have not found where to make play lists, or if I even can.

The software is okay, a bit old fashioned for my taste. I would love to see it laid out more like tweetdeck, that would rock. There is not a good help file section that I can find beyond the basics you get now in the Zune software.

Other than those few things, I like this device. I would choose the Zune over an iPod even with the lack of support for the Zune to Vista. I know MS is slow but I expect them to catch up. As I have told my brother I have gone to the dark side :-P being a ex linux user ( Ubuntu was my love ) so I am loving the ability I have using Vista to connect everything in my life, just not my music… not yet.

I wish I could also list my current play list here, so I can share what I am listening to, another hint for MS.

I do enjoy the fact that between my Computer, my external drive and the Zune I now have almost a terra bite in hard drive space, makes me feel positively geeky.
